How to turn on text to speech

Where to turn on reading chat aloud, how to set the voice, speed and volume, how the queue works and how to quickly stop TTS.

SatomiChat can read chat messages aloud. TTS is off by default and turns on with a single switch.

Turning it on

  1. Click the gear in the title bar.
  2. Open Text-to-speech.
  3. Turn on Enable TTS.

After that, all the other TTS settings appear on the page, and a wave button appears in the title bar to the left of the gear.

Voice, speed and volume

The Audio card has three settings:

  • Voice. The default is Random voice: each viewer gets their own consistent voice. You can choose one voice for everyone. More in Voices and per-viewer voices.
  • Speed from 0.5x to 2x, 1.00x by default.
  • Volume from 0 to 100% in 10% steps, 50% by default.

The sound goes to the default Windows output device; you can't choose a different device in the app. If you need TTS as a separate audio channel on stream, use the TTS widget for OBS.

The Play in app switch is on by default. Turn it off only if TTS already plays through the widget in OBS, otherwise phrases will play twice.

What gets read

  • Chat messages from all connected platforms.
  • Twitch raids, if Raids is checked in What to read aloud.

Follows, subscriptions, gifts, Super Chats and donations aren't read. Donations are read aloud by the donation service itself, in its alerts. The viewer's name isn't read by default either; turn it on by checking Nicknames.

How to stop it

  • Click the wave button in the title bar (tooltip Stop TTS). It cuts off the current phrase and clears the queue.
  • Turn off Enable TTS.
  • Assign keyboard shortcuts: Settings → Keyboard shortcuts, Text to speech group. There you'll find turning TTS on and off, stopping, skipping a message, volume up, volume down and “Mute the current speaker”. Shortcuts work even on top of a game.

Queue

Phrases play one at a time. Raids go first, then messages with a trigger command, then everything else. A regular message that has waited in the queue for more than 15 seconds is skipped so TTS doesn't fall behind the chat. Raids and command messages wait up to 30 seconds. The queue holds up to 32 phrases.

Testing without a stream

Open Settings → Chat Widget and click Message or Raid under the preview. In a narrow window, only icons are shown there; hover over one to see its name. The test event appears in the feed and in the chat widget in OBS, and is read according to your settings. The raid is read if Raids is checked in What to read aloud.
