Word replacements

How to teach TTS to read abbreviations, emotes, usernames and emoji correctly.

The replacement dictionary swaps one phrase for another before it's read aloud. It's useful for abbreviations, emote names, tricky usernames and emoji.

How to add a replacement

  1. Open Settings → Text-to-speech → Personalization → Replacement dictionary.
  2. Click Add replacement.
  3. Enter the word in the Find field, and what should be read instead in the Replace with field.

How matching works

  • Case doesn't matter.
  • If the Find field has only letters, digits and underscores, it matches whole words: “lol” won't be replaced inside “lollipop”.
  • If it has a space, a symbol or an emoji, it matches anywhere.
  • Rules are applied from top to bottom.
  • An empty Replace with simply removes the word from the phrase.

Replacements apply to the message text and to the name if name reading is on.
