TTS through OBS
How to send chat TTS to OBS as a separate source so you can control its volume in the mixer.
You can send TTS to OBS as a separate source. It then gets its own track in the OBS audio mixer, and you can adjust its volume separately from the game and your mic.
How to set it up
- Open Settings → Text-to-speech and turn on the Enable TTS switch.
- In the Link for OBS block, click Copy.
- In OBS, add a Browser source and paste the link into the URL field.
- In the source properties, check Control audio via OBS.
This link works through the cloud, even when SatomiChat is closed: the widget reads chat on its own using your TTS settings. The widget shows nothing on screen, it only plays sound, so the size and position of the source in the scene don't matter.
Volume
The Volume slider on the TTS page also applies to the widget. During a stream, it's also handy to make TTS quieter or louder in the OBS mixer.
To keep the sound from doubling
If TTS plays both in OBS and in the app, viewers may hear it twice. Turn off Play in app on the TTS page. The app suggests this itself when it sees that TTS is already playing in OBS.
Several copies of the widget
You can open the link in several places at once: in OBS, in Moblin, in a browser tab. Every open copy plays, and they all play the same phrases at the same time. You decide what goes on air: OBS sends the sound of the sources in the active scene to the stream, and copies in other scenes don't reach it.
If viewers hear an echo, two copies are going out to the stream at the same time. This usually happens when:
- one scene has two sources with the TTS widget, including when one of them is inside a nested scene;
- the widget is in both OBS and Moblin, and both play in the same stream;
- the widget is open in a browser tab, and OBS captures desktop audio.
Keep the widget in one scene and close the extra copies.
The app notices this itself: when the widget is open in two or more places, a hint with a Learn more link to this article appears on the TTS page. Copies in inactive OBS scenes count too, so the hint can appear even without an echo. If viewers hear TTS only once, everything is fine.
The wave button, the Stop reading, Skip message and Mute the current speaker shortcuts, and Mute TTS in the message menu work on all copies of the widget at once.
In a browser tab
You can also open the link in a regular tab, for example to listen to TTS without OBS. Browsers don't let a page play sound until you've interacted with it, so the tab only starts playing after you click on it. Phrases that arrive before the click are skipped.
To make the tab play right away, allow sound and autoplay for this site in the browser's site settings (they usually open from the icon to the left of the address bar). OBS doesn't have this restriction.
Old link
If OBS still has a TTS link from older versions that starts with http://127.0.0.1, it only works while SatomiChat is open. It's better to replace it with the link from the Link for OBS block.
If the widget is silent
- Is the Enable TTS switch on in the app? The widget takes its TTS settings from there.
- Is Control audio via OBS checked in the source properties, and is the source not muted in the mixer?
- If the widget is open in a browser tab, have you clicked on the page? Until you do, the tab stays silent.
- Has your daily limit run out? The widget uses the same limit.
