Link previews

Titles instead of addresses and clip, video and stream cards in the feed, how to set them up and why it's safe.

When a viewer posts a link in chat, the feed shows the page title instead of the address, and a card for the clip, video or stream under the message. You can tell what the link is right away, without opening it.

Link titles and cards in the feed, and where to set them up

Titles instead of addresses

The address is replaced with the title of the page, video or channel. After the title, the site the link leads to is shown in parentheses, for example “How to beat the first boss (youtube.com)”. Clicking it opens the same link in your browser.

The title is written by the page's author and can say anything. The site in parentheses comes from the link itself, so it always shows where the link really leads.

  • Titles work for any site, as long as the page has a title.
  • For a Google, Yandex, Bing or DuckDuckGo search link, the search query is shown instead of the address.
  • In a message with several links, the first three get titles.

The message first appears with the address, and the title replaces it a second or two later.

Cards

A card appears under the message when the link leads to a clip, a recording or a live stream.

The card has a thumbnail with the duration or a Live label, the title, the game, the author, the number of views or viewers and when it was published. Clicking the card opens the link.

There is one card per message: for the first link that has a thumbnail.

How to set it up

Open Settings → Appearance and click Link previews in the Display block. A menu with two checkboxes opens:

  • Titles instead of addresses: the title and site in place of the address;
  • Clip, video and stream cards: a card under the message.

Both are on by default. The right side of the row shows how many of the two are on. If you uncheck both, links stay as addresses.

The Link previews row is only visible while Show links is on. Without it, links in the feed are replaced with <link hidden> and get no preview.

Where previews don't appear

  • In the OBS widget: links stay as addresses there.
  • In pinned messages.
  • In the text of donations and other events. Viewer messages inside events, such as mentions and first messages, do get previews.
  • In deleted messages: moderators see the original address that was removed.

Game mode uses the same feed, so titles and cards show up there too.

Privacy

SatomiChat never opens links from chat by itself. Titles and cards are looked up by the SatomiChat server, so whoever posted the link can't see your IP address.

From web pages the server takes only the title. Card thumbnails come only from the platforms: Twitch, YouTube, Kick, TikTok and VK Video Live.

FAQ

  • The site doesn't provide a title or is behind a bot check. Instead of a placeholder like “Just a moment...”, the feed keeps the address.
  • The video or clip has been deleted or made private.
  • There is no connection to the SatomiChat servers. Once it's back, titles will appear on new messages.
  • The checkboxes in the Link previews menu are unchecked.

The title doesn't match the page

Titles are remembered for about half an hour, and a message already in the feed never changes its title. If the author renamed the video or page, the new title will show up later, on new messages.
